The sublime new album from Keith Kenniff aka Goldmund. An album of wordless songs, each holding an entire movie's worth of emotion.
Type Records brags some of the most forward-thinking minimal electronica artsists of the moment, and Helios lives up to the standards set. Eingya is very much in the same vein as Boards Of Canada’s The Campfire Headphase, with subtle hints of masculine programming beneath delicately crafted organics. Melody shifts beautifully between the gaps of For Years And Years, with a slow backdrop of gentle bass and paper-thin percussion, the piano melody gently leading the soft layers. Softly plucked acoustics blossom over swelling muted electronica, with top-heavy percussion and simple bass sounds completing The Toy Garden. Paper Tiger is an elegantly crafted song without words, with a careful structure that moves layers of percussion piano and found sounds. Undoubtedly the most accessible and most impressive track on the album, it plays out memorably over four and a half minutes. A memorable album regardless of the obvious Boards Of Canada references, Helios crafts wonderful fragments of acoustic electronica and twists them around simple melodies and punctuating beats.
